We Concentrate On Divorce So That You Can Get On With Your Life

Choosing to get a divorce is a difficult and emotional decision. Feelings will be hurt, in most cases financial stability will be threatened, and if children are involved, there will be custody and possibly parental relocation issues to be decided.

In New York State since October 2010, it is now possible to get a "no-fault" divorce, which means that you no longer need to have "fault" grounds for divorce, although marital misconduct may still be relevant to custody and equitable distribution issues.

Kingston Matrimonial Law Attorneys

Our family law attorneys will sit down with you and go over all of the circumstances of your marriage, your potential divorce and what the consequences of a divorce will probably be. We will give you a full blueprint of the timeline for your divorce, what you will need to do, how much it will cost and what the likely outcome will be.

We understand that every person's life is different; therefore, every divorce is going to be different. The more we know about your situation, the better we will be able to determine what is due you and your family in a divorce, what your responsibilities will be, and what you can expect to happen during the process and after the divorce is finalized. The average divorce in New York takes several months to resolve and you will need expert guidance throughout this process.

Help for Less Affluent Spouses

Part of the divorce reform legislation of October 2010 creates the presumption that a spouse who has less money is entitled to contribution toward his or her legal fees from his or her spouse. This legislation makes it possible to "level the playing field" and minimize the extent to which a wealthier spouse can wage a war of attrition by out-spending his or her spouse during the divorce.

Although we obviously require a retainer up front, like all divorce lawyers, we may be able to compel spouse to pay for part or all of your legal fees in the divorce.
